Canada Introduces Easier Travel Rules for Eligible Travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia

Canada has announced new changes to its travel requirements that will make it easier for eligible travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia to visit the country. The update is part of Canada’s broader effort to strengthen economic, tourism, and diplomatic ties across the Indo-Pacific region.

Under the new policy, certain travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia may now apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a traditional Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) when flying to Canada. This change is expected to simplify travel for qualified visitors while maintaining Canada’s border security and immigration integrity.

What Changed?

Eligible citizens of Indonesia and Malaysia can now apply for an eTA if they meet one of the following conditions:

  • They held a Canadian temporary resident visa within the last 10 years, or
  • They currently hold a valid United States non-immigrant visa.

This means that travellers who have previously undergone Canadian or U.S. immigration screening may no longer need to apply for a full visitor visa when travelling to Canada by air.

However, travellers who do not meet these conditions will still need to apply for a visitor visa before entering Canada.

Important Limitations

While the change creates easier access for many travellers, there are still important rules to understand:

  • The eTA option only applies to air travel.
  • Travellers entering Canada by land or sea will still require a visitor visa.
  • Work permits and study permits are still required when applicable.
  • Having an eTA or visa does not guarantee entry into Canada, as all travellers remain subject to border screening and admissibility checks.

Why Canada Introduced These Changes

The Canadian government stated that these updates are designed to strengthen Canada’s relationship with key Indo-Pacific partners while encouraging tourism, business travel, investment, and innovation.

The Indo-Pacific region continues to play a major role in Canada’s international economic strategy. Easier travel access can help:

  • Support commercial partnerships
  • Encourage business mobility
  • Improve tourism growth
  • Attract global talent
  • Create new opportunities for Canadian employers and investors

Canada also emphasized that strong security measures remain in place. The government confirmed that enhanced fraud detection, information-sharing systems, and screening procedures continue to be part of Canada’s border plan.

What This Means for Travellers

For eligible travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia, the process to visit Canada may now become faster and more convenient compared to applying for a full visitor visa.

This could especially benefit:

  • Business travellers
  • Tourists
  • Family visitors
  • Entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in Canada
  • Frequent travellers with previous Canadian or U.S. visa history

At the same time, travellers should still carefully review entry requirements before booking flights or making travel plans.

Final Thoughts

Canada’s latest visa policy update reflects its ongoing focus on building stronger international relationships while improving mobility for trusted travellers. For eligible Indonesian and Malaysian citizens, the expanded eTA access could reduce processing complexity and make travel to Canada more accessible.

As immigration and travel policies continue to evolve, understanding eligibility requirements and preparing proper documentation remains essential before travelling to Canada.
