Big News for International Students: Canada Reinstates PGWP Eligibility for 178 Study Programs

IRCC Reverses PGWP Changes — What It Means for You

Canada has officially reinstated Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility for 178 study fields that were temporarily removed in June 2025. The decision, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on July 4, is a major development for current and future international students in Canada.

At Adapt Immigration, we help you stay informed and prepared — especially when policy changes like this can affect your future.

What Happened?

  • On June 25, 2025, IRCC removed 178 specific fields of study (based on CIP codes) from PGWP eligibility due to labor market alignment.
  • Just 10 days later, on July 4, the IRCC reversed this decision.
  • This means all 178 previously removed fields are once again eligible for PGWP — effective immediately.
  • And yes, this change is retroactive: Students who applied between June 25 and July 4 are still covered.

These restored fields will remain eligible until early 2026, giving international students more time to plan.

Why This Matters

The PGWP is often your first step toward permanent residency in Canada. It allows you to gain Canadian work experience for up to three years after graduation — something highly valued in immigration pathways like Express Entry (CEC).

For many students, PGWP is the bridge between studying in Canada and building a future here. That’s why this policy reversal is a big win.

Who’s Affected?

You’re eligible if:

  • Your program falls under one of the restored 178 fields.
  • You applied for your study permit before or during the June 25–July 4 window.
  • Your institution is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).

Still unsure if your program qualifies? Adapt Immigration can help you review your study program’s CIP code and confirm your PGWP eligibility.

What Is a CIP Code?

CIP (Classification of Instructional Programs) codes are six-digit codes that categorize your academic program. PGWP eligibility is linked to whether your program’s CIP code appears on IRCC’s approved list.

Need help finding yours? We’ll guide you through it.

Examples of Reinstated Fields

Some of the fields now back on the PGWP-eligible list include:

  • Information Technology
  • Nursing & Allied Health
  • Accounting & Business
  • Skilled Trades
  • Engineering Technology
  • Media and Design

These are high-demand sectors that play a key role in Canada’s economy — and your pathway to permanent residency.

What You Should Do Now

Here’s what we recommend at Adapt Immigration:

  1. Get your CIP code from your school or offer letter.
  2. Verify your eligibility based on the latest IRCC list.
  3. Apply for your PGWP within 180 days of receiving your final transcript and confirmation of graduation.
  4. Prepare your documents early — and get professional help if needed.
  5. Book a consultation with our immigration professionals to map out your path to PR.
