Canada Sets 2-Year Limit on International Student Application

Canada sets two year limit on international student application

IRCC Minister Mark Miller announced today important changes within the International Student Program.

Here are 5 things you need to know if you or any of your family/friends is planning to apply as student here in Canada:

  1. Canada is implementing a temporary 2-year limit on international student applications. Approximately 360,000 study permit applicants will be accepted in 2024. That’s a 35% decrease compared to 2023. Starting September 1, 2024 international students with programs under the public-private curriculum licensing arrangement can no longer apply for PGWP.
  2. Allocation per province will be based on population. Provinces will be responsible on how the allocation will be distributed to DLIs. Applicants must provide Provincial Attestation together with their study permit application.
  3. The cap will not apply to applicants to graduate level of studies (Masters and Doctoral). The measure will also not affect those who are already in Canada and those who would like to apply for study permit extension.
  4. Issuance of Open Work Permit to spouses of international students will be limited to those who are enrolled in masters and doctoral, as well as professional programs such as Medicine and Law.
  5. According to IRCC Minister Mark Miller, “these measures are not against individual international students” but to ensure that they receive quality education and have all the resources they need to succeed in Canada.
