Canada Ukrainian Family Reunification Pathway Extension

The Canada Ukrainian family reunification pathway extension allows eligible Ukrainian nationals and their families to keep valid temporary status in Canada. This policy applies while they wait for permanent residence decisions.

As a result, families avoid losing legal status. In addition, they can continue working or studying during processing delays.

What Is the Canada Ukrainian Family Reunification Pathway Extension?

The Canada Ukrainian family reunification pathway extension allows eligible applicants to maintain lawful status in Canada.

Applicants can apply until March 31, 2027. They may request:

  • A new open work permit

  • An extension of an existing work permit

  • A new study permit

  • An extension or restoration of temporary resident status

However, IRCC still charges standard application fees.

Who Can Apply Under the Canada Ukrainian Family Reunification Pathway Extension?

You may qualify for the Canada Ukrainian family reunification pathway extension if you meet all three conditions:

  1. You are a Ukrainian national or an eligible family member.

  2. You applied under the Ukrainian family reunification permanent residence pathway.

  3. You are physically present in Canada.

Importantly, you do not need to wait for an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR). Instead, you can apply as soon as you meet the requirements.

Why This Extension Matters for Ukrainian Families in Canada

The permanent residence pathway closed to new applicants on October 22, 2024. However, IRCC continues to process applications submitted before the deadline.

Because of this extension, applicants can avoid gaps in legal status. Furthermore, they can:

  • Keep working legally

  • Continue studying

  • Stay in Canada without disruption

As a result, families gain stability while waiting for final decisions.

Important Deadline to Remember

Applicants must submit temporary residence applications by March 31, 2027.

If your status has already expired, you may still qualify for restoration. However, you must meet IRCC’s restoration rules. Therefore, applying early is essential.
